Pointing Seb Benthall from TOPP/OpenGeo in TOSW's direction - it sounds like this is exactly what he's trying to do with his own project.

From http://digifesto.wordpress.com/2010/02/18/whats-this-geonode-thing/#comment-206: "If there is anything I’ve learned at The Open Planning Project and OpenGeo, it’s that it is critical for the success of open source projects that they be “truly open”–not just with an open source license “slapped on,” but with a transparency built into its development and management process."

[...] It’s an ongoing situation, and that’s the difficult part of release early, release often. If I waited until all these things were perfect before releasing, it would take even more months. As it is, the content itself hasn’t been updated since September 2009. That was because we got it to the point of being good enough to start working on externally, and it has taken the interim time to arrange and create the upstream hosting. It’s rough around the edges, but improving every day, in part thanks to all of you finding and reporting problems.
Juanjo - thanks, I've fixed the ones on the front page and will look for more.

What I really need to do is get the BIND configuration fixed; I think I have the Apache config working. I'll be soliciting other sysadmins to help over this weeend. :)

Mo - I need to find a way to update the login creation page to say who to email for an account.

I know, that's a failure to force the extra barrier. In Fedora's wiki, we have the FAS that acts as a barrier to non-human wiki spammers. I know from experience that if I put up a standard wiki with self-accounts, it is full of spam pages within the week.

So for now, there is going to be a barrier to edit priviliges. What I need to do is grow people who have the proper permissions to create new users. :)

Meanwhile, this information is currently on the front page:

The links without the "www." doesn't work, and the wiki has some of those.

Adding the "www." everything works fine. Very nice book, thank you!

Ha! I knew I had some ill BIND configuration going on. Yet I'm not sure I get how the lack of A record for the sub-domain-less domain makes the incorrect URL work?

I fixed the link, it was supposed to go to /book instead of /wiki.

There remain a few server configuration things that need fixing, thanks for catching and letting me know about one of them. :)

That sound terrific. But it would be more terrific if the dns was fixed :

$ host theopensourceway.org
theopensourceway.org mail is handled by 10 mail.theopensourceway.org.

Since there is no A associated with the domainname, the first link for html version do not work here. The link can also be fixed, of course :)

That sound like a perfect companion to The art of community.
